The name of this country “India” is a word with no meaning. We have accepted the name given by foreign invaders, and consider that fine. But if someone says we should restore the ancient name of this land, people will say it is “communalism” (religious fanaticism).
India is a mispronunciation of the Greek Indoi, which means people who live near the Indus river. First of all, we don’t even have access to this river, as it runs through Pakistan. Secondly the river’s correct name is Sindhu. Thus we have a series of mispronunciations piled on top of each other by various invaders, resulting in our present national identity.
The Sindhu river was mispronounced as Indhu by the Persians, then the Greeks took that mispronunciation and further mispronounced it as Indos, and created the name of the country as Indoi. Later the British mispronounced this and created the modern name “India”, a word with no actual meaning and no connection to the local population. All of these names are names imposed by outsiders and invaders. Even the name Hindustan is a name imposed by invaders.
Hindustan is the Persian name for India. If you look into the Avesta (the sacred texts of Zoroastrian religion), you can find they have borrowed many Sanskrit words but have replaced all ‘s’ letters with ‘h’. For example hapta-hindu is used instead of sapta-sindhu. “Ahura” is used instead of “asura”.
Why was the Sindhu river used to define the sub continent? Because all the invaders were initially stopped there. If you look at Alexander the Great’s invasion of India he turned back just after crossing the Sindhu river. That region doesn’t define the country, it defines the limit of their invasions. We do not even have access to the Sindhu river today, so why should the country be named after that landmark which no longer exists for us?
As different groups invaded from the west, the first geographic layers of the “country” they encountered were along the Sindhu river. Since they could not penetrate deeper to the heart of the subcontinent at the time, they named the entire subcontinent after the outer boundary they first encountered (at the Sindhu river).
Traditionally this land has been glorified in shastra as having sapta-sindhu (sapta-sindhavah), seven great sacred rivers. Naming the entire country after just one river located at the outer boundary would be like naming the entire United States as New York.
We need to restore the traditional ancient name of this country, Bharata, as has been in use for more than 5,000 years by the ancient rishis, the indigenous residents of this land and forefathers of all modern Indians.
This is not communalism or religious fanaticism, this is simply truth and history. People should be called by the name they themselves choose, and the name their ancestors chose, not the name imposed on them by foreign invaders.
In modern times, many neighboring countries have restored their ancient names or chosen the name they want to identify with (freeing themselves from their British colonial past). Ceylon was changed to Sri Lanka. Burma was changed to Myanmar. Siam became Thailand. It is time for India to break free from its colonial past and restore the ancient name of the country, Bharata.
As a side note, it is my personal opinion that it would be best for the name to remain as Bharata (the Sanskrit version), and not Bharat (the hindi version that drops the final “a”), to be most acceptable to all states, and especially the southern states that are against imposition of Hindi. The original Sanskrit name is the oldest and thus best name to adopt, and it would make it clear that it is not an imposition of Hindi on them, as the name exists in all of the local languages in this form.

Yes, I agree. The name India is a nondescript name and has colonial overtones. But Bharat in Samskrit means the land of the people who crave for or relish knowledge, Jyana, where “Bha” means light or knowledge and “Rath:” means to relish or crave or pursue. The name Bharath stands for and represents the ethos, culture and civilization values of the nation. In Brathahari’s natya shastra, Bha is Bhava, Ra is Rag and Ta is Talam. When we come to the post Independent India, our National Anthem refers to Bharat and not India. And, most importantly, the Preamble to the Constitution says our country is Bharath. It’s not something new which needs to be added or inserted in the Constitution. Many public and private sector undertakings have Bharath as their name.
The article says: “In modern times, many neighboring countries have restored their ancient names or chosen the name they want to identify with (freeing themselves from their British colonial past). Ceylon was changed to Sri Lanka. Burma was changed to Myanmar. Siam became Thailand. It is time for India to break free from its colonial past and restore the ancient name of the country, Bharata.”
The problem with this argument is that “Bharata” is a Hindu name, India has many Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, etc., and the Indian government is officially secular: not favoring the majority faith over religious minorities.. Jahnava Nitai dasa notes that many South Indians don’t want Hindi imposed on them as the national language of India. Similarly, non-Hindus would not appreciate their country being designated with a Hindu name. Also, many devout Hindus believe the term “Bharata-varsha” originally meant not merely the Indian subcontinent, but the entire world, believed to have been ruled by Vedic kings.
Of course change India back to Bharata.commonality. call that communalism.
I just noticed this article was written in 2019. Is this issue still going on in Bharata?
Bharata or Bharat is still the most appropriate name for India, though size is not the same. Call it change or evolution, the reality humans can’t deny or shouldn’t
YES . WE FULLY CONCUR WITH YOU. THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN THOUGHT OVER LONG BACK. BETTER LATE THAN NEVER
very well said and commented on the critical topic. BHARATA will be true name.
Bharata [In Tamil we call Baratham] , but still we use and know Baratham , while raeding Bahawathgeetha . India is English version
Sanskrit & Bharata are the Original and stand without any support
[From Sri Lanka]
Very interesting article.
I was thinking the possibility that Bharata received its name because it is the land where occurred the Mahabharata?
The term Indian, qualifying both people from India and native people from South and North America, resulted maybe from a mistake due to the 15th century conquistadors that other western countries continue to use.
It is right that it is a colonial word.
But after all, the name INDIA is so well known and appreciated in the whole world today…
Also, before English empire, many different territories and kingdoms existed, some fighting with each other, and one could not say these territories and kingdoms where united under the same name India nor Bharata.
À central state did not exist.
Yes. the name should be changed to Bharata!
Absolutely not! I am of the opinion that religion should have no role in government and such a step is widening the door. When one faith has prominence another has less. Never in world history has theocracy not been oppressive by its very nature. From the Holy Roman Empire, the Spanish Inquisition, to Iran, Pakistan and The KSA claiming to act for our Creator.
It is a welcome change, Bharath is the original name and let our nation be called ‘Bharat. Bharath’ Mata ki Jai.
Bharath is appropriate.
Comments by Bhagwan Sri Sathya Sai Baba on this.
From where did the terms ‘Bharat’ and ‘Hindutva’ emerge?
February 27, 2001
(Conversations with Students)
Then the conversation turned towards the origin of the term Hindutva and Bharat.
Swami : The terms Hindutva and Bharat have not originated from any individual’s name.
It came from Goddess Saraswati. This is Her birthplace. This is the place where the Vedas and the Puranas originated. Saraswati, Bhagavati, Bhudevi, Bharati, and thus the word ‘Bharat’ came into being.
In olden days, our culture evolved around the Sindhu river (also known as River Indus, now in Pakistan). When Alexander came to India, the first syllable ‘si’ was mispronounced as ‘hi’ thus giving the term Hindu. From then on, foreigners have called us Hindus.
Just a thought to share ”Bharat & Mahabharat Vs Britain & Great Britain”
Bharath would be a fine name, a more ancient name is Aryavat, the land of the Aryans. I am a Parsi Zoroastrian and in our Avestan Aryan scriptures, the seven lands created by Ahura Mazda are described, and one of them is Hapta Hindu, the land of the seven rivers, said in our Aryan scriptures to be inhabited by people of a divine nature. Avestan had not borrowed words from Sanskrit as mentioned in the article..Avestan and Vedic Sanskrit are both sister languages coming from a common Aryan source language. S in Sanskrit is pronounced as H in Avestan, like Som in Sanskrit is the same as Hom in Avestan, we still have an ancient Hom Yasht prayer and sacred fire ceremony. By the way Lokmanya Tilak wrote the Artic home in the Vedas in which he proved that the Aryan forefathers lived in the Artic pole. Sad to see that no one remembers him today. Our Avestan scriptures speak of an ancient homeland Airyano Vaejahi, seed land of the Aryans from where the forefathers migrated to the south and the South west, i e. to iran, India and Europe.
At a time when people more concerned to survive the onslaught of calamities like drought/floods/hunger/homeless people/ food and unemployment we are discussing changes of names of road/cities and now the country. Can you imagine the costs? Can you imagine the identity change.?
Caste creed religion is taking a toll on human values. Build health system free for rich and poor to get the same facilities. Build another hundred colleges so everyone gets admission and not based on quotas. is it fair to a bright student from higher caste to be deprived of seat based on caste? at We have our priorities all configured to create a divide rather than bring about togetherness. God is one for all. What happened to ” I am a proud Indian”? If all are concerned about losing the colonial effect_ can you stop education and dialogues in English? Today India has the biggest advantage of being an English-speaking nation integration ourselves in world podiums. Focus on making India’s democratic values, definitely secular by respecting all religions stronger.
India is a SECULAR STATE, where the people can follow any religion as they wish. Also the people of this country speak various languages, follow various cultures and consume different kinds of foods. One could be proud to say to the world that in spite of these they live as brothers and sisters with harmony unless and until the poisonous politicians divide them for their personal gain. If at all a necessity arises to change the name (in this 21st century) we can do so only by coining a NEW name that would give the meaning of ENDURANCE. Thanks.
a Great Civilization , co-terminus with the SARASVATI which started 71000 years ago ,,,,, which spawned a Culture spanning an entire Sub-Continent , with so many geograpical varieties ,, so many languages , religions ,so many variations of all hues ,,,, all under the Name BHARATA ( the land of Bharati , goddess Sarasvati ),, and the Umbrella of SANATANA DHARMA ( Universal Righteousnes : belongs to all humanity , not a religion but a Way of Life )
the SARASVATI went underground around 3200 BC ( after tectonic shifts in the aftermath of the tumultous Maha Bharat War ( death of Sree Krishna 3102 BC ) , the dregs left behind moved away towards the Gangetic Plains , and others towards Iran/and further on and on
( hence strange similarities : – brahmA : Abraham / Sarasvati : Sara ,,,, Allah : Al Ilah ( Ilah , one of the names of the mother-goddess Lalita ,,,,Isha : Jesus ,,,,, and so on )
the later-on many many Invaders , who found the now left – behind remnant SINDHU , a formidable barrier : they corrupted the SINDHU , into Indu , Hindu / INDUS , Indoi , Indos , India ,,,
do we still have to go by these corrupted names , to celebrate the slaughter of our men / rape of our women /abduction of our baby daughters, sons to far away slave markets ,,,
you can change your religion ,, but you can’t change yiur grandfather , no ?
My opinion is the name of the country may be Bharatham.
‘Bharata’ (ending with ‘a’) is the most appropriate name for our country.
Needless to mention here, that in our pooja saMkalpa, we traditionally chant ‘bharata varShE’, ‘bharata khaMDE’, …
INDIA IS UNDOUBTEDLY BHARAT. ITS TIME WE WENT BACK TO OUR ROOTS INSTEAD OF CLINGING ON TO THE COATTAILS OF THE WHITE ‘DORAI’ WHICH MANY INDIANS STILL DO
Perhaps a referendum to pick a name
BHARAT OR BHARATAM IS TOTALLY RELEVANT AS WE REVERT TO ONE OF OUR ANCIENT NAMES
We are not changing name; we are bringing our original name BHARATH. we should have done this long ago. it is the foolish ness.
off our Congress who ruled our great country for more than 7decates. this credit goes to crook Nehru. thanks to Narendra Modi and his team, who are trying to bring the glory back to us and making the world to know! what BHARATH is
Indeed, as Jesus’ said is: ‘Give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and to God what belongs to God. ‘ we should never compromise our beliefs and values. May be if BHARAT is being returned to his own land and his people their destiny will flourish more and more, where all people in what ever religion they’re will benefit from it.
Dear All,
I am a Sri Lankan, but I love Bharat Desha. I totally agree for the suggestion and vote for the same. The name INDIA should be changed as BHARAT.
Yes. Its time we change back to Bharat. Significantly around 22nd Jan 2023
